The Ockie Guide to Personal Finance Sites
These pages are devoted to personal finance, with
particular reference to visually impaired people.
If you don't have access to tables of financial information in the
newspapers, where do you find what you want to know?
Fortunately, there are several websites which have a lot of useful information.
Here are a few to try:-
- The Motley Fool
is an informative, well-structured site with information, tutorials and discussion groups.
- moneyExtra is another informative site, with comparison pages for savings,
investments (stock market), current accounts, insurance products etc.
Becoming a member gives you shopping facilities, with deals on such things as wine!
- WiseBuy has a simply-laid-out easy-to-understand investment guide; especially useful for reducing tax.
- MONEYWEB is a site full of resources.
- UK Banks Guide is a very comprehensive site containing well-categorised resources.
- Charles Schwab has an excellent stocks-and-shares tutorial.
- Moneyfacts gives probably the most impartial overview of the current state of things like savings rates, mortgages, pensions etc.
A bit "framesy", but fairly accessible.
This site would not be complete without a mention of
- TheMoneyBag.
Smaller than The Motley Fool and less commercial, it has a range of discussion forums.
So, why this page? Well, comparisons are all very well, but nowhere is there any mention of accessibility of websites for visually impaired people. Legislation both here and in the US is helping to make financial sites more accessible, but there is a long way to go. Nevertheless, many banking sites now are somewhat accessible - there are very few no-go sites.
